After a long numb period, Lisbon is enjoying a surge in construction activity with planning permissions and projects soaring after years of urban decline. The city is living a property boom and consequently, a new city skyline is showing up.
As the city regenerates, Lisbon is becoming an increasingly popular habitat for foreign investors.
Lisbon’s azure skies are dotted with forests of cranes as scores of construction workers give Portugal’s capital a shiny and new, if pricey, veneer. For years the local construction industry lay in the doldrums – but today the city is a hive of activity, a boon for those involved in its overhaul.
We have to think very carefully about how we rehabilitate our city centers. If we allow tourism to take over, they will lose all the life and character that draws people to them.
